SEMPRE-BIO is a European Horizon Europe-funded initiative aimed at developing cost-efficient biomethane production solutions to support the circular economy and reduce fossil fuel dependence. The project establishes three European Biomethane Innovation Ecosystems (EBIEs) to demonstrate innovative technologies for specific feedstocks and valorization routes:
- Spain: Electrolysis and CO2 biomethanation convert wastewater into biomethane, which is used as bio-CNG for public transportation.
- France: Pyrolysis and CO methanation transform green waste into biomethane for grid injection as bio-LNG.
- Belgium: Cryo separation processes manure organic waste to generate biomethane (stored locally as bio-LNG) and liquid CO2, which is further valorized into biopolymers, biochemicals, and alternative protein sources.
The project runs from November 2022 to April 2026, involving 16 European partners from 6 countries. It aims to increase cost-effectiveness, diversify production technologies, and contribute to market uptake. SEMPRE-BIO's comprehensive business plan targets an estimated decarbonization potential exceeding 200 million tons of CO2 equivalents annually, aligning with the European Green Deal's sustainability goals.
