Hydrostor is disrupting the conventional understanding of what energy storage options are available today, by deploying an innovative underground long duration energy storage solution that ensures clean energy supply is available 24/7, even when the sun isn’t shining, and the wind isn’t blowing.
Hydrostor’s patented Advanced Compressed Air Energy Storage (or “A-CAES”) technology integrates compressed air, underground caverns, and water, with proven components from traditional mining and gas operations to provide a low-impact and low-cost energy storage solution.
A-CAES is emission-free and offers distinct advantages compared to alternative energy storage technologies, including a 50+ year lifetime, zero efficiency degradation, 8-24+ hours of duration, location flexibility, and does not rely on hard-to-recover minerals. Because A-CAES was intentionally designed around existing supply chains and mature workforces, it is highly scalable and can be deployed today.
Of critical importance are Hydrostor’s substantial innovations that build on the maturity of traditional compressed air storage. While traditional CAES has been operating for over 50 years at the multi hundred-megawatt scale, its expansion has been constrained due to specific geology requirements and the need to combust natural gas in the discharge process, thereby resulting in harmful emissions.
A-CAES represents a new breed of the technology that is emission-free and flexible to locate.
A typical 500 MW / (8-hour) 4000 MWh A-CAES facility can supply clean energy to 400,000 households, abate 45,000,000 metric tons of CO2 over a 50-year lifetime (if displacing coal), and employ up to 750 people during construction and ~40 full-time jobs during operation.
